GGA Statewide Call: 2026 Legislative Debrief
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, journalist Rahul Bali, WABE and Danny Kanso, Vice President of Public Policy at Georgia Budget & Policy Institute (GBPI), provided an important overview of the the 2026 Legislative Session in its final week. This call highlights the decisions most relevant to philanthropy, insights on budget and policy changes, and how funders can engage strategically to advance their missions.
Lawmakers at the Georgia Capitol are considering budget and policy decisions that could have major implications for communities and nonprofits across our state with Crossover Day scheduled for next week. The House passed a major literacy bill (HB 1193) with overwhelming bipartisan support, which will place a literacy coach in every K–3 school. Many are closely tracking how the state will serve vulnerable children given a multi-million-dollar projected shortfall in the child welfare system budget, as well as, proposals on Medicaid expansion, tax relief, and early education.
