Leveraging Your Influence: Engaging in Public Policy

In the first of a series of GGA webinars, industry subject matter experts provided strategies and tactics to use to foster better understanding and direct connections between grantmakers, policymakers and communities. Then, grantmakers from across the state shared their experiences implementing these strategies and tactics.

Danah Craft and Fred Jones share an overview of the Federal Legislative process and strategies that work from Foundations on the Hill. When making an ask: 1) state your request, 2) share a hyper-local story from the congressperson’s district, 3) restate the request.

Danah also explains the different nuances between bipartisan and nonpartisan language. Fred encourages us to share the value proposition of the nonprofit sector and specifically how we are bettering the state. Together we can elevate the work of the nonprofit sector.

Be clear, be confident and don’t overthink it. The beauty of your story is that it’s going to continue to evolve and your site can evolve with it. Your goal should be to make it feel right for right now. Later will take care of itself. It always does.
